Ode to pyrite

Pyrite is versatile and striking in many forms, which is why it is featured in numerous designs in our shop. This iron mineral was called "Fool's Gold" because of its striking resemblance to gold, which confounded early prospectors.  

The name derives from a Greek word meaning "a stone which strikes fire."  Pyrite has an interesting mix of earth energy - balance, stability, patience - and fire energy - warmth, passion, illumination and enthusiasm.  A pretty great combination!

The Incas (Peru) and the Aztecs (southern Mexico) are said to have polished large slabs of pyrite for use as gazing mirrors.  North American Indians also used pyrite during healing ceremonies and fashioned the mineral into amulets.  Here at Bella Bijoux Charleston, we continue that tradition by creating our own amulets.    

Notice the different pyrite forms in items in our shop. Some are rough, matte and unhewed textures. Others are tumbled, polished and sparkling. Shapes range from faceted, round beads to tiny polished rectangles to larger, imperfectly cut cubes. And pyrite appears in hues ranging from silver to bronze to gold.
